"The child can only develop by means of experience in his environment. We call such experience work." ~Dr. Maria Montessori~The School's curriculum is based on creating a prepared environment appropriate for children from three to ten years of age to engage in meaningful work. Our goal is to help each child learn to grow into a love for themselves and the world around them. It is designed to allow the child to satisfy each sensitive period when he is ready. ~ The classroom has Practical Life exercises for developing life long skills of organization, concentration, and care of their environment. These exercises encourage control of movement, eye hand coordination, and small motor control. There are Montessori Sensorial, Language, Math, Geography, and Science materials to creatively challenge the child. The environment includes classroom pets, plants, outdoor gardening and two bird sanctuaries. ~ Our playgrounds are designed to help the young child's developing body gain strength, confidence and a sense of well being. We have play structures, slides, swings, bike road, teeter-totter, sandbox, basketball/handball court, and a two story tree house all set in a wooded park like environment. ~ Various unit studies are taught during the course of the year. These include dinosaurs, ocean life, outer space, animals around the world, Geography, Social Studies, in depth cultural studies of different continents and countries, Math, Science and many more depending on the interest of the children.
~Quotes by Maria Montessori~
There is much to love about Medford Montessori - the compelling curriculum, individual attention and caring teaching staff. The years our daughter attended, we were very grateful to have her in a safe, nurturing environment where she was challenged to learn. The true benefit of our Medford Montessori experience is really showing now; three years after she's moved on. MMS taught Aja how to think and learn. The foundation she received in the basics will serve her well though out her education and life.- Dana Curwen RayburnEnrichment at it's best... Every child should have MMS as his or her springboard into the education realm. The foundations, building blocks, and confidence boosters all serve as valuable assets that will propel a child both academically and socially....as an educator and a mommy, my compliments are endless and my children's experiences are forever beneficial. Eternally grateful......- Liz Owen LandonWe have found MMS to be a superior educational experience for our son. Opting for a strength based education in our opinion will always be superior to the public schools. Our son has always felt very comfortable with his teachers and their dedication and compassion is second to none. - Mark & Tammy HiddeOur daughter has been going to Medford Montessori for 4 years now, and we have watched her blossom into a self-confident, creative and independent child. The support and love her teachers have given her over the years has really helped draw her out of her shell allowing her to take on new challenges with enthusiasm. We will miss the school family that we have come to know so well but thank them from the bottom of our hearts for the invaluable educational foundation they have given our daughter.- Elizabeth & Michael TrainaWhen both of my children were ready to start preschool there was no question on where they were going to go: Medford Montessori! I wanted them to feel safe, I wanted them to have their self esteem supported, and of course I wanted them to have a great learning environment with exceptional teachers: just like I had as a Medford Montessori Alumni. I do not remember everyday I had up until third grade there but I do remember the feeling of love I had going there. What a gift it was to my children to leave them at a school where the teachers were my teachers or alumni like myself, which is proof in itself that Medford Montessori is loved! My kids NEVER have not wanted to go to school. Medford Montessori has given my children the gift and the knowledge it gave me: eagerness to continue to grow emotionally, physically and mentally my entire life. It taught our family that learning is fun!- Robin BurgessWe absolutely love Medford Montessori! Both of my kids have had wonderful experiences-- from preschool through third grade. The teachers are not only dedicated, but truly love their students. Montessori has given my kids a strong foundation for their education and it allowed them to have a smooth transition into another school. If given the chance, I would choose Medford Montessori all over again! My daughter still stops by to say "hi" to her teachers and to help in the classrooms once in a while. - Shannon CannonAll 5 of our kids attended Montessori with Jana and Rachel. After the first child went through, we knew there was no other way for the others that followed. The staff was so much a part of our lives during and after school and the teachers so nurturing. When I think of school families, Montessori definitely exceeds the definition! My kids still love to drive by the school and often want to drop in and say hello (~they are as old as 14 and as young as 6). I can't think of a better start for any child.....- Rebecca Piels JohnsonMedford Montessori has been a wonderfully nurturing experience for our entire family. We have 3 boys. Two attended from preschool through 3rd grade and our third son will be finishing 4th grade there this year. The staff of the Medford Montessori School are wonderfully caring people who passionately help each child to learn and grow as individuals. One thing that has especially struck me about the impact this school has made on my kids is that each one of them feels very comfortable with who they are and they are confident they have the skills to accomplish anything. They aren't afraid to take on new challenges, they welcome them. What a gift this school has given them! It is a warm, loving environment that has been a home away from home for my kids and they each cherish their memories of Medford Montessori. After 11 years of getting to know everyone at this school, I am grateful for every minute my kids spent there and if I could do it all again, I wouldn't change a thing.- Sue Martin
Montessori (pronounced MON-tuh-SORE-ee) education was founded in 1907 by Dr.Maria Montessori, the first woman in Italy to become a physician. She based her educational methods on scientific observation of children's learning processes. Guided by her discovery that children teach themselves, Dr. Montessori designed a "prepared environment" in which children could freely choose from a number of developmentally appropriate activities. Now, nearly a century after Maria Montessori's first casa dei bambini ("children's house") in Rome, Montessori education is found all over the world, spanning ages from birth to adolescence.Children age 3-6 years of age, Montessori emphasizes learning through all five senses, not just through listening, watching, or reading. Children in Montessori classes learn at their own, individual pace and according to their own choice of activities from hundreds of possibilities. Each child is engaged in individual or group activities of their own, with materials that have been introduced to them by the teacher who knows what each child is ready to do. Learning is an exciting process of discovery, leading to concentration, motivation, self- discipline, and a love of learning.Children 6 and older learn to do independent research, arrange field trips to gatherinformation, interview specialists, create group presentation, dramas, art exhibits, musical productions, science projects, and so forth. There is no limit to what they created in this kind of intelligently guided freedom. There is great respect for the choices of the children, but they easily keep up with or surpass what they would be doing in a more traditional setting. There is no wasted time and children enjoy their work and study. The children ask each other for lessons and much of the learning comes from sharing and inspiring each other instead of competing with each other.
